The $10 American Gold Eagle Coin is another official gold bullion coin of the American Gold Eagle series. The coin is minted by the US Mint and has a fractional value of the 1/4 oz. The $10 American Gold Eagle coin was first minted in 1986 along with other coins of the American Gold Eagle series. The coin was issued in both brilliant uncirculated and proof finishes. All coins of the American Gold Eagle series are 22-karat gold coins, which is the crown gold English standard for gold coins. All gold coins of the American Gold Eagle series have the same look and differ only in the value lettering on the reverse of the coin. The reverse of the coin was designed by Miley Busiek and featuring a male eagle landing on to a nest and holding an olive branch. There are a female eagle and her hatchlings in the nest already. The obverse of the $10 American Gold Eagle coin is much more famous as it's a rendition of the famous St Gaudens Double Eagle, designed by Augustus St. Gaudens and showing walking front lady Liberty. The original design of the St Gaudens Double Eagle is considered to be one of the most successful and beautiful designs among all United States coins.
First issues of $10 American Gold Eagle coin were minted using Roman numerals for dates in the same way as they were used for the original St Gaudens Double Eagles in 1907 and 1908. Later issues changed numbers in dates to more common Arabic numerals. An interesting fact about American Gold Eagle coin is that they by law must be minted from the gold mined in America, making them truly American Gold Eagles.
The $10 American Gold Eagle coin is considered rather a small bullion coin and it's more popular among coin collectors than gold investors.
