The $25 American Gold Eagle Coin is an official bullion gold coin of the United States and it's the second-size coin in the American Gold Eagle series. The coin was minted since 1986 and has a fraction value of 1/2 oz, aligned to the main unit – the 1oz American Gold Eagle. The $25 American Gold Eagle coin is issued both in proof and brilliant uncirculated finishes and as all other coins of the series, it has gold contents of 22-karat, which is the crown gold standard for English and US gold coins. All denominations of American Gold Eagle series have the same designs except for the values, which vary for each denomination. The obverse of the $25 American Gold Eagle coin is a slightly modified version of the famous $20 St Gaudens Double Eagle, minted until 1933, and featuring walking front Liberty. The original design of the St Gaudens Double Eagle by the votes of many was considered one of the most beautiful US coins ever. The reverse of the coin shows a male eagle with an olive branch in its claws landing on a nest with a female eagle and her hatchlings; it was designed by Miley Busiek.
An interesting fact about American Gold Eagle coins is that they must be minted from the gold mined in America by law, which makes them truly American Gold Eagles literally. First issues of the $25 American Gold Eagle coin as other cons of the series were minted using Roman numerals for the dates as for the original St Gaudens Double Eagles minted in 1907 and 1908. Later Arabic numerals were used for the dates on the coins.
The $25 American Gold Eagle is an average size bullion coin and even though premium value of the coin would be higher than for its larger cousin, 1 oz $50 American Gold Eagle coin, it would be less than for the coins of smaller denominations ($5 and $10).
