The $5 American Gold Eagle coin has the same look as other denominations of the American Gold Eagle series. The obverse of the coin features a slightly altered design of the St Gaudens Double Eagle: Walking Liberty. The design of the original St Gaudens Double Eagle was considered so successful and beautiful, that it eventually was used for American gold bullion coins as well. The reverse of the $5 American Gold Eagle shows a male eagle holding an olive branch and landing on a nest with a female eagle and hatchlings in it.
First few issues of the coins, from 1986 to 1991, used Roman numerals for dates – the same way as original St Gaudens Double Eagles did in 1907 and 1908. Later issues switched to using more common Arabic numerals. Another interesting fact about $5 American Gold Eagle coin is that all gold coins of the American Gold Eagle series should be minted from the gold mined in America, effectively making them real "American" Gold Eagles.
The $5 American Gold Eagle coin is not priced or valued proportionally to its bigger cousin, $50 gold coin. But that's very normal for bullion coins of smaller denominations – their premium is usually much higher than ones of the bigger coins. That makes bullion gold coins of smaller denominations less popular among gold investors but more popular for coin collectors.
