The $50 American Gold Eagle Coin is a US official gold bullion coin and is the largest coin of the American Gold Eagle series. The $50 American Gold Eagle coin was first minted in 1986 when the series was started. All American Gold Eagle coins have gold content of 22 karat (which is a standard for US and British gold coins and called the crown gold English standard) and are minted in brilliant uncirculated and proof finishes. The $50 American Gold Eagle coin has gold composition of 1 troy ounce of pure gold and you can see more specifications for the coin below:
| Gold composition: | 0.9167 |
| Gold content: | 1 oz |
| Weight: | 33.930 g |
| Diameter: | 32.7 mm |
| Thickness: | 2.87 mm |
All coins of the American Gold Eagle series have the same look with a small difference of having denominations and gold composition value on the reverse of the coin. The obverse of the $50 American Gold Eagle coin is a slightly modified version of the famous St Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin, minted at the beginning of the 20th century. It depicts Liberty waking and facing front and this design is considered to be one of the best among all US coins ever minted. The reverse of the coin was designed by Miley Busiek and shows a male eagle holding an olive branch and landing on to a nest with a female eagle and her hatchling.
First issues of the coins minted from 1986 to 1991 had the same Roman numerals as the original St Gaudens Double Eagles minted in 1907 and 1908. Later issues of the $50 American Gold Eagle coin were minted using more common Arabic numerals. And another interesting fact is that all coins of the American Gold Eagle series must be minted from the gold mined in America, making them pretty much true American Gold Eagles.
As the $50 American Gold Eagle coin is the largest coin in the series, it has the lowest premium comparing to any other coin of the series, which is very normal. Larger bullion coins usually have less significant premium than smaller ones, which are minted more for coin collectors than for gold investors.
