First Spouse Gold Coins were issued as a part of the program started by the US Mint to honour the spouses of the United States Presidents. The First Spouse program is running in alignment with the Presidential $1 Coin Program and there will be one gold coin issued for each President. If a president didn't have a wife (spouse) while serving his presidential term, the coin would be still issued, but instead of having a corresponding spouse, it would have Liberty as it was depicted on the coins of that time.
First Spouse gold coins are another example of a new concept in bullion cold coins known as collectible bullion coins. This idea was first introduced when Gold Panda were issued in 1982 and every following year it had a different design, encouraging collectors to buy those coin not only for their gold value. The trick had worked and early panda gold coins were sold for up to $3,000. First Spouse gold coins are more commemorative gold coins but still are initially sold at the gold value plus premium, making them somewhat bullion gold coins.
The First Spouse gold coins are issued in the rate of four pieces a year with one gold coin in proof or uncirculated finish every quarter. The program started in 2007 and will last presumably until 2016. All First Spouse gold coins will share the same specifications and they are as follows:
