Starting from 1990 the Royal Canadian Mint has been issuing Canadian commemorative gold coins in denomination of $200, which highlighted events of great remembrance through out Canada. Like the Canadian $100 gold coin, the weight and the gold composition of the coin varied through out the years of its production, but not with any significant differences.
The obverse of the Canadian $200 gold coin shows a portrait of The Queen Elizabeth the Second with the actual name written on one side and D.G Regina on the other, common to all Canadian coins since 1952. But the reverse of the coin had different designs each year. Each coin was issued to celebrate a different important event or subject relating to the history of Canada, its achievements and heroes.
For example the first Canadian $200 gold coin was issued in 1990 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Canadian National Flag, and depicts a group of young Canadian children carrying the flag with joy and pride. The next 1991 year, the coin was issued to commemorate the Canadian number one sport hockey, and the coin is showing three hockey players. Some of the most recent Canadian coins issued in 2006 are celebrating events such as the Timber Trade, which brought investments and immigration to eastern Canada. Another important event celebrated in the same year is the 130th anniversary of the Canadian Supreme Court. The year before, in 2005, the coin commemorated Fur Traders of Canada. Development of fur trading led to exploration of the country and the formation of the oldest and largest company in Canadian History Hudson's Bay Company.
The coins usually come in an attractive leather case with "Canada" and the date of issue embossed in gold on its back and a traditional Canadian Maple Leaf emblem on the front.
