Elizabeth Monroe was the wife of the fifth president of the United States of America, James Monroe. She was born as Elizabeth Kortright in 1768 in New York and had Dutch roots. Elizabeth met James Monroe in 1785 and married him the same year when she was of the age of 17. They had three children together. One of the deeds she is known by is saving Madame LaFayette, the wife of the American Revolutionary General and Hero Marquis de LaFayette, from guillotine. Elizabeth Monroe was not very popular among the Washington society as she was considered snobbish, but that was probably due to her poor health. She died in 1830 at the age of 62.
