Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He was also one of the most influential Founding Fathers and promoted ideals of republicanism in the United States. At the age of 29, Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton, who was 23 years old at the time and a widow. They married in 1772 and had six children together. Martha died in 1782 and Jefferson had never remarried. As he served in office from 1801 to 1809 and was a widower at that time, the coin will depict Liberty instead of his spouse.
