Martha Washington Gold Coin is the first coin in the First Spouse program started in 2007 by the US Mint to honour the spouses of the United States Presidents. Martha Washington gold coin as all coins of the series has a denomination of 10 dollars, gold composition of 0.9999 and gold content of 0.5000 oz. The coin weights 15.54, has a diameter of 26.49 mm, and 1.88 mm thick. The coin is issued in both proof and brilliant uncirculated finish.
Martha Washington was the wife of George Washington, the first president of the United States. And consequently she was the first First Lady of the United States even though the title was not known or used at that time. She was born as Martha Dandridge in 1731 in the state of Virginia. She had married Daniel Custis when she was 18 and had four children with him; none of them lived longer than young adulthood. After the death of D. Custis, she met Colonel George Washington and married him in 1759 at the age of 28. Martha Washington provided great support to her husband during the American Revolutionary War, but didn't approve his election as President of the United States of America. She died in 1802, two years after her husband's, George Washington, death.
