Ancient Byzantine Gold Coin
Collecting coins or Numismatics was an art originated at the time of the Roman Empire – collecting Greek antiques and coins were the privilege and hobby of the Roman nobles. Later at the time of the Dark Ages, Renaissance magnates were willing to pay big money for the Roman coins that featured portraits of the great Roman emperors. Collecting gold coins was always the privilege of riches and collecting ancient gold coins may turn to be not an easy or affordable task for someone. Coming around decent ancient gold coins is much harder then other non-precious metal ancient coins as gold coins as well as silver coins that were not in circulation were often collected by governments, melted, and used as new coins, whereas older bronze or copper coins were quite often just disregarded and treated with less attention.
Even considering a given scarcity, there's quite a wide range of ancient gold coins that you can come around. The most popular ancient gold coins of course are Greek and Roman with their gold Stater, Aureus, and Solidus. Byzantine gold coins are probably in the same row as Roman gold coins as Byzantine was a part of it. There're also Persian and Minor Asia gold coins – those are less common and harder to come around. Ancient Indian and Chinese gold coins require some very specific knowledge and proper reference books and catalogues to identify them properly. And there're of course minor encounters of more exotic gold coins like Mayan or Incan gold coins.
Identifying and authenticating ancient gold coins is much harder than any contemporary ones as quite often information is sparse, specifications are not clearly defined, and common techniques used for modern gold coins may not work for ancient gold coins at all. The best advise in this case would be to deal only with trusted sources and coin dealers and best of all buy only properly certified or slabbed coins.
The Ancient Gold Coins section of our website is currently featuring only three categories: Greek gold coins, Roman gold coins, and Byzantine gold coins. We're planning to expand it eventually when enough valuable information is collected and enough time is presented.
