US gold coins have history of over 200 years and during this period US Mint issued a great number of gold coins for circulation as well as commemorative and bullion gold coins. There were seven denominations issued for circulation; some of them were issued for a longer periods and had bigger mintages and some were issued just for a couple of years or even less. Eagle Gold Coin

The Eagle was the first gold coin (alone with the Half Eagle) issued by the United States of America. It has denomination of 10 dollars and was minted from 1795 to 1933 (the last year gold coins were issued for circulation in US). It is the only coin that was minted during the whole period of circulation gold coins in the USA. The Eagle was a base-unit of denomination for US gold coins (being equal 10 dollars) and was the largest base-unit for all US coinage. The design of the Eagle gold coin had changed twice since its initial Turban Head type. Half Eagle Gold Coin

The Half Eagle was another first gold coin (alone with the Eagle) issued by the US Mint. The coin had denomination of 5 dollars (hence the name – Half Eagle) and the period this coins was minted was a bit shorter than of the Eagle (from 1795 to 1929). But for this period this coin had the most types and variations than any other gold coin minted by the US Mint. There're six main types of the coin design, including: the Turban Head, Draped Bust, Capped Head, Classic Head, Liberty Head, and Indian Head, and almost each of them had minor variations making it almost 20 different types of this gold coin. Quarter Eagle Gold Coin

The Quarter Eagle was another pioneer among US gold coins as it was issued just the next year after the first two denominations were minted (the Eagle and Half Eagle). It was produced from 1796 to 1929 and it was derived from the Eagle base-unit and hence had denomination of $2.5. As for the Half Eagle, the Quarter Eagle had six major designs and there were: the Turban Head, Draped Bust, Capped Head, Liberty Head, and Indian Head. Double Eagle Gold Coin

The Double Eagle gold coin was the biggest denomination for the gold coinage that US Gold Mint ever issued for circulation. The coin was minted from 1849 to 1933 and had denomination of $20, still having the $10 Eagle as a base-unit of denomination. There were two major designs and they were: the Liberty Head and Saint Gaudens. The Saint Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin was considered the most beautiful US gold coin, so the obverse of the coin was borrowed for contemporary US gold bullion coins – the Gold American Eagle. One Dollar Gold Coin

The One Dollar gold coin or the Gold Dollar was not a planned issue as originally all gold coinage was supposed to be based on the $10 Eagle system. But as there was a surplus of gold after two recent gold rushes and due to the fact that some enterprising individuals had already started minting gold dollars on their own, the government decided to step in and after some hold-ups in the Congress for over a decade, in 1849 the US Mint started issuing gold dollars. The gold dollar was minted until 1889 and had two major designs: the Liberty Head and Indian Head. The coin was the smallest denomination for US gold coins issued for circulation. Three-Dollar Piece Gold Coin

The Three-Dollar Piece is another unusual gold coin minted by the US Mint and was issued between 1854 and 1889. The purpose of this strange denomination was correlation with the cost of a first class post stamp, which was 3 cents at the time. Stella Gold Coin

The Stella was a pattern coin with denomination of 4 dollars and was minted only for two years between 1879 and 1880. The purpose of the coin was an exploration of a possibility for the US to join the Latin Monetary Union, which had unified the currency of more than 10 European countries at that time.
