World Gold Coins
Home >>
World Gold Coins is a section of our website dedicated to gold coins from around the world, excluding the United States gold coins. First gold coins appeared in around 800-600 BC independently in Europe in Ancient Greece, and in Asia in China and India. Collecting gold coins or numismatics was known since the time of the Roman Empire, but never collecting gold coins were so popular and relatively affordable as now. The value of a gold coin at the old times, even a couple of hundred years ago, was so high that collecting gold coins was not reasonable for anyone but riches and nobles.
The range of world gold coins is really huge, but gold coins of modern time are quite different from the gold coins of the 19th century and before. At that time, gold coins were mostly used for circulation, some as trade coinage (bullion nowadays), and only very small amounts as commemorative gold coins. Circulation of gold coins was generally stopped around the world in 1920s-30s of the last century, and distribution of gold coins is quite different: literally hordes of commemorative coins from practically each country in the world, a significant amount of bullion gold coinage, and apparently no gold coins for circulation at all.
In the World Gold Coins section of the Gold Coins Shop website, you will find gold coins issued both for circulation, as bullion and trade coinage, and as commemorative coins. They are grouped by countries and there're descriptions and other info on different types and kinds of gold coins. At the present, we have separate categories only for a number of countries and you can see them all in the table below. You still can see gold coins from other countries, which are not in the table below, and if you're looking for a particular gold coin, just trying using the search box on the right.
