Home >> World Gold CoinsUK Gold Coins or British Gold Coins have a history coming back to the time of Roman Empire. Through many centuries Great Britain produced many kinds and types of gold coins and most common and more known would include gold guineas, gold sovereigns, gold pounds, and gold Britannia coins. Gold Guineas
The first guinea was issued in 1663 under Charles II and it was the first English machine-struck gold coin. Originally, the guinea was equivalent to a Pound Sterling or twenty shillings, but with the change of gold value and general devaluation through the centuries, the value of the guinea was changing as well, finally settling at the mark of 21 shillings. The gold guinea coin was minted until 1816 when it was replaced by the Pound system and the Sovereign coin in particular. Follow this link to see current listings for Gold Guineas.
Gold Sovereigns
First gold sovereigns were produced in 1489 for Henry VII and they are still in production. The sovereign traditionally has a nominal value of one pound, but at the same time it is a bullion coin (trade coinage) that doesn't have any denomination on the coin itself. The weight and composition of sovereigns have been fluctuating through their existence, but they were finally settled to be 22 karat (92%) and 7.322 g (or 0.2354 oz) respectively. There're Full Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns, as well as Double Sovereigns (Two Pounds) and even Quintuple Sovereigns (Five Pounds) (follow the links to see current listings of the corresponding UK gold coins).
Gold Pounds
The Pound or Pound Sterling is an official currency unit of the Great Britain. Even though a pound is an equivalent of the British sovereign, which is a British bullion gold coin, the pound itself was rarely minted in gold, comparing to a sovereign. Yet it has its place in the line of UK gold coins. A double sovereign, which is in fact two pounds and quintuple sovereign, which is five pounds were both issued since the time the sovereign was introduced in 15th century and always they were always minted in gold. In modern time, UK gold coins have plenty of other pound denominations issued as commemoratives or bullion coinage, including 10, 25, 50, and 100 pound coins. Gold Britannia
The Britannia is a British bullion gold coin minted since 1987. The Britannia gold coin has a denomination of 100 pounds, having gold composition of 0.917 and containing 1 troy ounce of pure gold. It weights 32.05 g and has a diameter of 32.69 mm. There're also smaller sizes of the coin and they are: 50 pounds (1/2 oz), 25 pounds (1/4 oz), and 10 pounds (1/10 oz). The design of the coin is not the same through all years of minting and that makes the coin more interesting comparing to some other gold bullion coins (e.g. American Gold Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, etc.).
